Graduate Program Information
Welcome to the M.A. program in History at UNC Charlotte. We appreciate your interest in our program. Within our three main geographic fields of the United States, Europe, and Latin America, our department has particular strengths in the history of: African Diaspora and African-Americans, from slavery to civil rights; Old and New South; War and Peace from the 16th century to the present; Business/Technology/Medicine/Environment and Urban History. Students can choose to do an M.A. by thesis or M.A. by examination. We also offer a concentration in Public History, with a focus on new media.
Students may pursue the M.A. degree full or part time. Full-time students are eligible for graduate assistantships that are awarded by the department on a competitive basis. For more information about the application process, including eligibility for assistantships, see Admission Requirements.
In addition to award-winning faculty, our program offers the advantages of a major vibrant metropolitan area, with numerous historical institutions, sites, and archives with exceptional offerings in Southern, civil rights, and local business history. From our program, many graduates have been admitted to nationally reputed Ph.D. programs and law schools.
Others have found employment in community colleges and secondary schools, businesses, museums, libraries, historical sites, and preservation organizations..
We welcome inquiries from prospective students. Please direct questions to our Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Peter Thorsheim (Peter.Thorsheim@charlotte.edu) and our Director of Public History, Dr. Tina Shull (kshull1@charlotte.edu).
Thank you for your interest in our program.
