Internships and Jobs

As students of public history, it is important that you get practical experience in internships before going into the job market. The resources on this page provide you with links to internship websites, as well as job websites. In the case of internships, review the descriptions carefully and make sure you follow History Department guidelines before pursuing the internship.

Internships

Our students have held internships with a variety of organizations and institutions including: Atkins Library Special Collections (UNC Charlotte), Belk, Inc., the Charlotte Museum of History, the Culture and Heritage Museums of York County, the Levine Museum of the New South, the Gaston County Museum of Art and History, the Historic Landmarks Commission, Historic Charlotte,Inc., Charlotte Trolley, Inc., the Charlotte Area Sports Hall of Fame, Latta Plantation, Lincolnton Downtown Development Association, the North Carolina State Archives, the North Carolina Museum of History, the National World War I Museum in Kansas City, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, The Robinson-Spangler Carolina Room of the Charlotte Public Library, and the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum.

Students work with the Director of Public History, a faculty adviser on campus, and a professional mentor at the internship site. Internship opportunities are posted for enrolled graduate students. Additionally, public history internships can be found online at a number of websites and students are encouraged to create their own internship opportunities.
